The children that participate will use math to problem solve coordinates, actively use the scientific process to make and analyze hypotheses, as well as extensively utilize technology to program robots to complete different challenges. Research has shown that children from disadvantaged schools do not have the laboratory experiences of their peers and this grossly impacts how they perceive science and math education. By 8th grade 63 percent of children from low socioeconomic backgrounds score below average on state assessments. GEERS Afterschool program will change this by providing 3 hours of supplemental instruction designed to make math meaningful and science engaging. Fun is at the heart of the program but is also designed to be intensive and rigorous. Children will participate in weekly laboratory experiences and robotics challenges that are stimulating, innovative, and enjoyable.
Not only will students improve in math and science, but GEERS Afterschool program will also enhance their cooperative skills.
